Client Validation

Changing the Displayed Client/Project Information

If the search form you are using displays the client/project information as static (uneditable) text followed by a "Switch Client" link, then your firm requires that you specify a client or project information from a central list. If you wish to change the currently displayed client/project information, click Switch Client and select another client or project from the displayed list.

Administrator Preferences

Introduction
The LexisNexis® research system client validation process allows a firm to use a plug-in to call your client validation program, or to configure the service to redirect to a page residing on your intranet site. Once a user chooses a client or project information, that client is sent back to the service.

Each firm must appoint a client validation administrator. The following section details the process by which the administrator is presented with a list of preferences, stores those preferences, and then retrieves those preferences for use in the LexisNexis research system.

The Administrative Process

  1. A firm identifies an administrator for each of the firm's bill groups.

  2. When a user signs in to the LexisNexis research system with an administrator ID, extra preferences appear on the Preferences page.

  3. When the administrator invokes the Preferences link, the following client validation options are presented for configuration:

    Off

    Disables client validation (default).

    On (Plugin)

Enables client validation using a plug-in supplied by LexisNexis to call your firm's client validation program.

    On (URL):

Enables client validation by redirecting users to a URL on your firm's Intranet. Enter the URL in the text box.

Note:  If you select "URL" but don't supply a URL, Sign In will look for the LexisNexis plug-in.

URL to enable Client URL Validation Test
If you provide a test page, when a user signs in and Client Validation is "On," LexisNexis loads the test page first to see if it loads correctly before sending the user to the URL. Enter the URL for that test page here.

Note:  Click "Download Test File to enable testing of URL" to download a script that enables us to use your test page. (The URL you enter must point to the test page on your Web server with the test file already included.)

    Test URL
Click this to test the URL after your test page plus the downloaded test file are saved on your server.

Only enable client validation for the following IP Address:
Use this to disable client validation for users who are not connecting through the firm's network (and therefore don't have access to the client validation pages or program). You can define a range of IP addresses by using the pound sign, for example, 128.12.4.###

If Client Validation page fails to load

At sign-in, if the test page does not load correctly,

    • Users can type in a client instead of using your client validation page if you select "Allow user to type in new client".

    • Users will not be able to type in a new client instead of using your client validation page if you select "Do not allow user to type in new client." Users can choose a previous client.

    • When an administrator or other user accesses Confirm Client form, the LexisNexis research system checks whether this user has options configured for client validation. If no options are configured, the client/project information is displayed in an edit box where it can be changed.

If client validation is enabled, the form displays the client/project information as a static text field. The user must click New to select a client from either your client validation page or Web page.

A Description for Administrators
Introduction
The LexisNexis client validation process allows a firm to use a plug-in to call your client validation program, or to configure the LexisNexis research system to redirect to a page residing on your intranet site. Once a user chooses a client or project information, that client is sent back to the LexisNexis research system.

Using a Plug-In
LexisNexis has developed a plug-in that interacts with the current 7.x Session Manager client validation programs. If a firm chooses, the plug-in can be embedded into the firm's client validation page. When the user clicks the button displayed by the plug-in, the client validation program configured for the 7.0 Session Manager is launched, the user can choose a client, and the plug-in returns the client to the LexisNexis research system. The plug-in currently works in the following browsers:

Using a URL to Redirect to Your Web Page
This section details the sequence of events that occur in the course of the client validation process.

When the user accesses the "Confirm Client" form:

  1. The LexisNexis research system stores the URL for the current search form in a database. Keeping this URL lets the service return the user to the search form which initiated the change client request.

  2. If there is a test URL configured by the firms's administrator, the LexisNexis research system appends an "id" field to the QUERY STRING of the test URL configured by the firm's administrator, checks to make sure it begins with http:// or https://, then loads it into an invisible iframe. This test file must submit a request to http://www.lexis.com/research/execute?task=clientIsAlive&id= followed by the id in the query string. If this page loads, then the user will be permitted to select "New" and be forwarded to the user's client validation page.

  3. After appending an "id" field to the QUERY STRING of the URL configured by the firm's administrator, the LexisNexis research system redirects to the test URL supplied by the user's firm, for example:

    http://www.myfirm.com/client?id=12345

and the firm's client validation page is displayed.

Note: The "id" name-value pair should be sent back to the LexisNexis research system. The name-value pair is needed to support multiple browsers being open at the same time and to ensure the user is returned to the proper location in the LexisNexis services.

If the field is not sent back to the LexisNexis research system, the service still functions. However, the user is returned to the default Search page rather than to the last form visited.

  4. Once the user chooses a client or project information, the firm's intranet redirects to the following URL:
    http://www.lexis.com/research/execute?task=changeClient&client=myNewClientText&id=12345
  5. When the LexisNexis research system processes the URL in step 3, the user returns to the last viewed search form, on which the new client or project information now appears.
