You can use the Quick Search form to retrieve documents containing your search terms in any of the following categories of legal documents.
- cases
- treatises and analytical materials
- agency materials
- news stories
- codes/statutes and regulations
- law reviews and journals
You can search either by selecting from your recently used sources, or by selecting a jurisdiction and practice area, and then the sources to search in.
To search,
- Select the search method you want to use. The search methods are:
- Terms and Connectors
A Terms and Connectors search uses Boolean search logic. Enter the key words or phrases you want to find and optional connectors to link your search terms. For more information on search syntax, click terms
and connectors.
- Natural Language
If you select "Natural Language", you can enter words describing your research topic, either as a sentence or a list, enclosing phrases in quotes. For more information about using a Natural Language search, click natural language.
- Easy Search
If you select "Easy Search", you are not required to enter your terms using terms and connectors or natural language guidelines, but if you do, the LexisNexis® Total Research system automatically detects which type of search to perform.
- Enter your search terms.
- Click either "Source Type" or "Recently Used Sources."
If you select "Recently Used Sources,"
Select a source from the drop-down list and click the Search button.
If you select "Source Type,"
- Select a jurisdiction and a practice area from the drop-down lists.
To select more than one jurisdiction or practice area, click the "Select Multiple ..." link next to the drop-down list. Another page will open. Check the jurisdictions and practice areas you want, then click "OK - Use Selected" to continue your search.
- Check the boxes for the source categories you want to search.
- Click the Next button.
After you click the Next button, you'll see a page displaying your search information and the individual sources available in the source categories you selected. Review your search information, check the sources you want to search, and click the Search button to continue. To cancel without running the search and return to the previous page, click the Cancel button.
Field Help
- Enter Search Terms
- Enter your search terms.
- Select Sources By
- Select "Source Type" if you want to select the categories and sources for this search. Select "Recently Used Sources" if you want to use the categories and sources from a previous search.
Note: A source automatically appears in the "Recently Used Sources" drop-down list after you have selected it from the source hierarchy. When you select a 21st source in the source hierarchy, an unretained and the least-used source drops off to make room for the newest source.
- Jurisdiction
- Select a jurisdiction from the drop-down list. Click "Select Multiple ..." to search multiple jurisdictions.
- Practice Area
- Select the practice area you want to search in from the drop-down list. Click "Select Multiple ..." to search multiple practice areas.
- Source Categories
- Check the source categories you want to search in.
(You'll see the source categories only if you you select "Source Type.")
- Recently Used Sources
- Choose one of up to 20 sources in this drop-down list and click Search to select that source.
(You'll see this list only if you select "Recently Used Sources.")
- Next
- Click this button to see a summary of your search request.
