Lexis ® Search Advisor: Learn More About a Topic Tutorial - Textual Version.

This tutorial demonstrates how to get information about a legal topic in Lexis ® Search Advisor, and begins at the All Topics > Copyright Law > Infringement > Fair Use Defenses search screen.

Lexis Search Advisor provides easy access to analytical materials including:

For access to this material, select the "Analytical Materials" tab. The list of links to this topic's analytical materials includes "Nimmer ® on Copyright." Select that link to continue with this example.

When you select any of the analytical materials, Lexis Search Advisor runs a hidden search in appropriate sources and displays the results.

Now let's return to the Analytical Materials screen. To do that, select the "Edit Request" link.

You can also find articles from a variety of law review sources. For example, select the "Intellectual Property Law Review Articles" link. Again, return to the Analytical Materials screen by selecting the "Edit Request" link.

Next, we'll discuss the "Suggested Words and Concepts tool. For access to that, select the "Cases" tab. Then type your search topic into the entry field located under "Step 2" and select the "Suggested Terms for My Search" link. Terms relating to your topic are now displayed below the entry field.

You can use the Suggested Words and Concepts tool to help formulate your search request. Lexis Search Advisor uses a patented information algorithm to search cases for the legal and/or fact terms that appear most frequently in conjunction with your topic.

These terms appear as links on the search form. To add terms to your search request, just select the link for the word or concept. Terms you select are added to your search request.

Additional terms relating to your topic can be accessed by selecting the "Show" button. A new list of Suggested Terms will be displayed. Lets select "fair use defense" to add it to our search
