Lexis ® Search by Topic or Headnote: Search by Topic Tutorial - Textual Version.

We’ve already looked at some different ways of finding legal topic information, which includes a content summary, background search terms and phrases, and links to other topics that may be on-point to your legal issue.

Lexis® Search by Topic enables you to search across multiple jurisdictions and content types in one search. Use the Search by Topic option to search across sources including:

For access to this material, first select the "jurisdiction". We'll use Federal for this example.

Next we'll find the appropriate sources by selecting the Select Sources button. A list of available sources display by category. You can check single or multiple sources across the available categories. For this example, let’s select the Federal Court1st Circuit Federal Court Cases Combined source.

Now select the Ok – Use Selected button.

Now that you are back on the search form, you also have the option of including any search terms in your search request using either Natural Language or Terms and Connectors..

You are ready to run the search. To do that select the Search button.

Lexis Search by Topic retrieves targeted search results based upon our earlier topic selection and the search terms we entered.
