In this module, you'll learn how to explore the LexisNexis® legal topics when you're not sure which topic is appropriate for your research. Once again, suppose you're interested in learning about copyright law and specifically about the fair use defense against a claim of infringement.
Lexis® Search by Topic or Headnote legal topics correspond to established and emerging practice areas of law. For this example, select the "Copyright Law" link.
The next screen lists groups of topics associated with copyright law. Each topic group has a "plus" icon next to it. To list the topics in a group, select its plus icon. To continue with our example, select the plus icon for the Infringement Actions topic.
Some topics are associated with related topics that may interest you. To list them, place your mouse cursor on the Related Topics link next to a topic. A pop-up box lists the related topics, which you can select for your search if you wish.
To select a topic on the original topic list for your research, continue to select plus icons until you find a topic that best suits your research issue. Then select the topic name. Note that you can select any topic on the list, regardless of its position in the list. To continue our example, first select the plus icon for the Defenses topic, then select the Fair Use topic. Then select General Overview.
